Excel: Update Column
Update Column allows you to update an existing financial model with data from the relevant 10-K, 10-Q, or 8-K.
Formatting
Update Column is designed to be plug-and-play with your model as-is. However, there are some requirements the model must meet for Update Column to function properly:
- All line item labels must be in the same column.
- All cells denoting fiscal period must be in the same row. This is usually row near the top with values such as "FY 2022" or "1Q22".
- Currently, Quill does not support denoting periods with dates such as "Sep-22". It must contain a year, and optionally a single number denoting quater.
Run the update
- Set up the column you wish to update. You do this by typing in a period such as 2024 Q4, like the cell Y1 in the image below.
- Navigate to the Quill tab in Excel. With the new column selected, click Update Column.
- Fill out the form with the following inputs:
- Company name or ticker: Company used to update column.
- Period: Excel row in which the period titles appear in model. Quill will attempt to select the correct row automatically.
- Line Items: Excel column in which the model's line items appear. Quill will attempt to select the correct column automatically.
- Update Column: Excel column you wish to be updated. This will be the column you had selected in step 2.
- Insert hyperlinks: If selected, each cell in the model will contain a URL link that cites the number in the original document.
- Show uncertain values: By default, Quill omits values for which it is not 100% certain. If you would like to insert these values in the model, check this box. Uncertain values will be highlighted so you can double-check them.
- Insert comments: Search, summarize, and insert commentary as an Excel comment for each line item. This increases processing time by ~1 minute per 100 line items.
- Click Update and wait as the request is fulfilled.
- Once fulfilled, you will have the option to review the changes made to the model. If you wish to revert the changes, click Undo.

tip
By default, Quill will insert a #QUILL_RESOLVE
link for each uncertain value. This link will take you to our web app where you can quickly resolve the value.
